Students find out top career advice from Prudential

By: Bhavini Pathak, Enrichment Programme Manager

Actuaries skills are in great demand throughout the financial sector, particularly in investment, insurance and pensions. Moiz Khan and Claire Weston from Prudential, an international finance company, are actuarial science professionals. They visited Bellerbys London to answer student questions on career pathways into actuarial science. The students were able to explore routes into the sector, the challenges these roles and the key attributes employers are seeking in an ideal candidate.

Claire, who graduated from University of Oxford said that employers are looking for a highly numerate student, with good grades, experience in the workplace (voluntary or paid) and in a relevant sector if possible. She said that the need to be an excellent communicator is a must.

In interviews, candidates should explain themselves, both in terms of what they have done academically and non-academically, show some personality and also show how they think. New student starters do well when they show employers how well they can learn.

The session moved further to explore ways to make a CV stand out to employers. In the question and answer session Moiz explained that most jobs require some element of talking to clients. Enrichment activities will help develop an ability to interact with professionals and learn presentation skills.

In closing questions students explored actuary pay scales. Actuarial professionals are employed in risk management by large firms. Actuaries have enjoyed better pay increase than most other professional groups in recent years; the economic downturn has had little impact on their salaries.

Head of Maths and IT, Alp Aslan, who attended the session thought it was a brilliant opportunity. He said:

"Students were given the opportunity to understand the importance of mathematical, IT and statistical knowledge which is pivotal in business finance. Students that come from international background are made aware that enrichment plays a big role in university application and prospective jobs."
