Lee Miller Lecture

As the new term begins, a new enrichment activity takes place. Find out how this Lee Miller lecture at Bellerbys Brighton helped you in your academic studies.

On Wednesday 27th January 2016, Bellerbys Brighton held an engaging lecture by Anthony Penrose, director of the Lee Miller archives.

Lee Miller was a 20th century photographer and was one of only four female war photographers in that time. The lecture was described as 'Exceptional', 'moving' and 'a masterclass in presenting' by enrichment leader and head of art history, Maria Bonner.

Having enrichment activities like this is really beneficial to you as a student. This lecture was very relevant to the students studying on the History of Arts pathway as Lee Miller showed an understanding of 'Surrealism' which is a topic studied within class.

Students said they really enjoyed the lecture and that it was exciting to be able to say that they have met Lee Millers son- Anthony. Having regular activities for students is important for their college work and it gives them a moment to step back and spark a passion. Enrichment programmes also show universities that students have an interest in culture and that they have a high level of commitment and engagement with their chosen subject. Not only that, the top universities will also want to see that you have interests outside your subject of study so make sure you attend as many enrichment activities as possible!

Lee Miller moved to Sussex after her time in the war and here in Brighton it was brilliant to celebrate her history. Maria, who secured Anthony as a speaker, also said,'' I love coming up with new ideas for the students as I love getting them out, but without the support of the Enrichment team it would not have been possible."

On 6th March 2016, there is another chance to see  Lee Miller's work at the Imperial War Museum with the Creative Arts pathway.

If you are interested in participating in any Academic Enrichment trips, please see the Enrichment Team for more information.
